The healthiest drink on the Planet is made from the yolk of an egg, according to a study published Monday in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
The researchers said the yolks are also a source of vitamin C and antioxidants that help prevent cancer.
The study, which compared the nutritional properties of powdered egg whites with egg white products from grocery stores and other health food stores, is the first to show that egg whites are as good as or better than milk and eggs for people with type 2 diabetes.
Dr. John R. Pappas, who led the study, told reporters at the American Diabetes Association’s annual meeting in Atlanta that egg yolk was a health food source that could be consumed without the doctor’s supervision.
“We believe that eggs are the best food source of dietary protein and carbohydrates that you can find,” he said.
Pappas’ team analyzed data from more than 2,200 people who were followed for three years.
The study compared the health benefits of powdered eggs with egg whites made from milk and egg whites from the same sources.
Dr. Frank L. Oz, a professor of nutrition at the University of Pennsylvania, said powdered egg white was the best source of protein for people on the spectrum of diabetes.
He told reporters that the study’s results showed that powdered egg yolk could help lower blood sugar and insulin levels.
Oz said powdered eggs contain more protein than regular egg yogurt and may be more nutritious than regular eggs because of their lower sugar content.
In addition to its nutritional benefits, powdered egg products can help people manage their insulin levels, as well as their cholesterol levels, according the Mayo Clinic.
